polar opposites.
No matter how different two things seem to be, there are always some subtle similarities that often go unnoticed.

novocain stain.
last night i was lying stiffly on my top bunk, staring at the dusty beige ceiling above, imploring [in vain] for sleep to come to me. as my mind wandered away to other midnight musings, my eyes could not help but fixate on the small, sideways scribble "I ♥ U". some previous bunk-dweller must have engraved it with a pencil - who knows how long ago.
because it was in pencil, i suppose i could have erased it if i had wanted, if it had bothered me enough. but the fact would remain that - even if it erased perfectly, without a trace of ever having been there - it was, at one point in time, there. it existed.
which led me to wonder: when we love someone, really love them, is it possible for this emotion to ever leave us? or does it leave an invisible stain eternally upon the heart? maybe this stain can almost numb the heart - a novocain stain. a numbness that can protect the heart from caring about any of the annoying little quirks that we start to notice after a while.
reflecting on the subject of love after valentine's day is a bit sad, to be honest. but those three tiny penciled symbols imparted on me a hopeful possibility: in this life filled with whirlwinds of change, perhaps true love - whether found in family, friend, or spouse - is the one constant on which we can depend.

it's all about the wordplay.
Just Paper
These words are just paper
Just vapor read aloud
Just a rainy cloud of thought
That slowly drizzled down
Just a knot of winding emotion
Entwined with ghostly ink
Just an ocean of drowning ideas
And old memories that won’t sink
These words are just paper
Just tapered feelings from within
Just a gentle blooming blossom
That sprouted from the skin
Just a strum of creativity
Preluding a pensive song
Just debris from forgotten dreams
That awake and strike the gong
peace.

willful suspension of disbelief.
Library Walls
A distant bell yawns a chime,
The notes all dance in rippled rhyme.
Dampened, crumbling concrete tables
Exchange ancient, earthy fables.
Trees cast their shadows on crimson bricks
Upon which winding, verdant vines transfix.
Crows and sparrows shout feathered calls,
All outside the library walls.
Through marbled masonry and double doors,
It leads to spiraled stairs and secret floors.
Dusty sunbeams smile through windows;
Shafts of light strike crinkled prose.
Brittle pages arise from lonesome dreams,
Transforming from ink to fantasy schemes.
Castles and dragons, Jurassic dinosaurs,
Underground bat caves and tropical shores,
Gods and heavens and outer space,
A biography of a familiar face,
Eskimos, Indians, and presidents,
A desert oasis and camping tents,
Volcanoes, mountains, and waterfalls,
All within the library walls.
The notes all dance in rippled rhyme.
Dampened, crumbling concrete tables
